Audible credits are tokens that let you buy one eligible audiobook, whatever its list price, and keep it permanently. You get them with an Audible Premium (formerly "Premium Plus") membership, gift memberships, credit codes or eligible returns. Most expire 12 months after they are issued, or straight away if you cancel.
That’s the short version. Below we explain how Audible credits work, what one is actually worth in the US, UK, Canada and Australia, how expiry works, and how to redeem a credit code step by step. If you’re new to Audible plans in general, start with our guide on how Audible membership works.

What Are Audible Credits?
An Audible credit is a membership benefit that buys one title marked with a "1 credit" badge, no matter how long it is or what it would cost in cash. That includes most bestsellers and new releases. A book you buy with a credit is yours to keep, even if you cancel your membership later.
A few basics, according to Audible’s official "Learn about credits" help page:
- You need an Audible Premium membership to receive credits. The Standard plan gives you a monthly selection instead, not a credit.
- Premium comes with 1 or 2 credits a month, or 12 or 24 credits upfront on an annual plan.
- Credits cannot be gifted or transferred to another account, but you can use a credit to buy an audiobook as a gift.
- You can spend credits in the Audible app, on the Audible website or on Amazon, but not through Amazon Music Unlimited.
How Do You Get Audible Credits?
Premium monthly and annual credits
Monthly Premium members receive their credit(s) at the start of each billing cycle. Annual members get all 12 or 24 credits right away, which suits people who listen in bursts.
Buying extra credits from Audible
Audible sells extra credits (single credits or bundles), but only to members who qualify. According to Audible’s help centre, you must:
- Be on a Premium plan that includes credits, and have been on it for at least 30 days.
- Have no credits left (Audible’s troubleshooting page says 1 credit or fewer).
- Have no outstanding payments.
Members on a free trial can’t buy extra credits at the discounted price, and neither can members whose membership is paused. Extra-credit prices depend on your plan and marketplace and are shown in your account, so check the current price there before you buy.
Gift memberships, gift codes and credit codes
A gift membership adds credits to the recipient’s account. If the recipient already has a membership, Audible adds all the gift credits at once instead of enrolling them in a new plan. Your existing billing carries on as normal. Gift vouchers and codes are covered in more detail in our Audible gift vouchers guide.
Returns that give a credit back
Premium members can return an eligible title bought with a credit within 365 days of purchase, through Purchase history on the Audible website (not the app), and get the credit back. A refunded credit expires 12 months after it is re-issued, and Audible may limit returns based on your history. See Audible’s "Return a title" help page for the full rules.
How Much Is an Audible Credit Worth?
An Audible credit has no cash value, and Audible’s Conditions of Use say credits are non-refundable. In practice, a credit is worth whatever you paid for it. That cost depends on your plan and marketplace.

Official cost per credit by marketplace (US, UK, CA, AU)
Here are the official membership prices we checked on Audible’s own pages for each marketplace on October 9, 2026. The cost per credit is shown in brackets.
| Marketplace | Standard (no credits) | Premium – 1 credit/month | Premium – 2 credits/month | Premium Annual – 12 credits | Premium Annual – 24 credits |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| US (audible.com) | $8.99/mo | $14.95/mo ($14.95) | $22.95/mo (≈$11.48) | $149.50/yr (≈$12.46) | $229.50/yr (≈$9.56) |
| UK (audible.co.uk) | £5.99/mo | £8.99/mo (£8.99) | Check current price | Check current price | Check current price |
| Canada (audible.ca) | CDN$8.99/mo | CDN$14.95/mo (CDN$14.95) | CDN$25.95/mo (≈CDN$12.98) | CDN$162.95/yr (≈CDN$13.58) | CDN$287.95/yr (≈CDN$12.00) |

Prices change, and memberships billed through the App Store or Google Play may be priced differently. Always confirm on your marketplace’s membership page before you subscribe.
When to use a credit vs. pay cash
Before you spend a credit, compare the book’s cash price (or member price) with what a credit costs you. Here’s an example with made-up numbers: if your credits cost about $12.50 each, spending one on a $9.99 book loses you money. Spending it on a $35 audiobook saves you about $22.50. A good rule of thumb is to save credits for long or expensive titles and buy cheap ones with cash or in sales. If you only want the odd book and don’t want a subscription, buying single titles can also work. Our Audible vs Kindle comparison explains how audiobook and ebook purchases compare.
Do Audible Credits Expire?
Yes. Most Audible credits expire 12 months after they are issued, or immediately when you cancel your membership, whichever comes first. The only credits that don’t expire are the ones issued through the Apple App Store or Google Play.

| Credit type | How you get it | When it expires |
|---|---|---|
| Membership credit | Monthly or annual Premium plan | 12 months from issue, or on cancellation |
| Extra purchased credit (website) | Bought on top of your plan | 12 months from issue, or on cancellation |
| Extra credit bought in the iOS or Android app | Bought in the app | Does not expire; kept after cancellation |
| Gift membership credit | Redeeming a gift membership | 12 months from issue, or on cancellation |
| App Store / Google Play membership credit | Membership billed by Apple or Google | Does not expire |
| Complimentary or promotional credit | Special offers or courtesy credits | 12 months from issue, or on cancellation |
| Return credit | Returning a title bought with a credit | 12 months from re-issue, or on cancellation* |

The 12-month rule and how to check expiry dates
Every credit has its own expiry date. To see them on the website, select your name, then Membership details → Credit summary. In the app, go to Profile → Settings (gear icon) → Membership → Details. Audible also sends a monthly credit summary email when you have credits expiring within 30 days.
What happens to credits when you cancel or switch plans
When you cancel, you lose any unused credits, so spend them first. Books you’ve already bought with credits stay in your library. Our guides on how to cancel your Audible membership and whether you lose your books if you cancel Audible cover this in detail. If you switch plans, including from Premium to Standard, you keep your existing credits with their original expiry dates. If a payment fails repeatedly, Audible may cancel the membership automatically, and the credits go with it.
App Store and Google Play exceptions
Credits from a membership billed through Apple or Google, and extra credits bought inside the iOS or Android app, don’t expire and stay in your account after cancellation. Returns for those purchases have to go through Apple or Google support.
How to Redeem an Audible Credit Code (Step by Step)
Audible’s official gift redemption page is audible.com/ep/redeemgift for the US. The UK, Canada and Australia use the same path on audible.co.uk, audible.ca and audible.com.au. The steps below follow Audible’s "Redeem a gift" help page.

If you’re already a member
- Copy the claim code exactly as it appears. Codes are case-sensitive.
- Go to the gift redemption page for your marketplace and sign in with the Amazon account you use for Audible.
- Select Redeem your gift, paste the code and select Redeem.
- Check your credit balance (next to your name on the site, or under Profile in the app). Then open Credit summary to note the new credits’ expiry dates.
If you’re not a member yet
Sign in or create an Amazon account during redemption. Audible requires a payment method and billing address on new accounts so it can check which titles are available in your region. For Audible Base credit packs, the product instructions say non-members should redeem one credit code first to activate membership, then redeem the rest. Check whether redeeming starts a membership or affects billing, and cancel any auto-renewal you don’t want.
Title Code vs. Credit Code
- Credit Code: adds credits to your account so you can choose books later. On Audible Base, credit codes are delivered by email right after payment.
- Title Code: unlocks one specific audiobook that you request at checkout (paste the book’s Audible link). It’s delivered manually, within 12 hours.
Pick a title code if you already know the exact book and edition. Pick credits if you want to choose later, but remember they’re subject to the 12-month expiry once redeemed.
Code not working? Common fixes
- Re-type the code carefully, since it’s case-sensitive. Check for spaces at the start or end.
- Make sure you’re on the right marketplace (a UK code goes on audible.co.uk).
- Confirm you’re signed in to the correct Amazon account.
- If you’re on a free trial, gift memberships may need to wait until the trial ends.
- Still stuck? Contact the seller with a screenshot. Audible Base support details are on our FAQ page.
Can You Use Audible Credits Across Marketplaces (US, UK, CA, AU)?
Your Amazon sign-in works on every Audible store, but each marketplace has its own catalogue, prices and plans. Buy codes for the marketplace where you’ll redeem and listen, and redeem them on that store’s site. Some titles are geo-restricted, so a book available in one region may not be playable in another. If you move country, Audible’s help centre says unused credits carry over when you change marketplace, but switching requires a billing address and payment method from the new country.
How to Get More Audible Credits for Less
If you go through more books than your plan covers, here are the main options, roughly from cheapest per credit to most expensive:
- Switch to an annual or 2-credit plan. In the US, the 24-credit annual plan works out at about $9.56 per credit, compared with $14.95 on the monthly 1-credit plan.
- Watch for member sales. Premium members get member pricing and periodic deals on cash purchases.
- Use returns sensibly for books bought in error (within the rules above).
- Buy discounted credit codes for your marketplace. At Audible Base, prices on the Audible US credits and memberships page at the time of writing start at $6.49–$6.99 for a single Audible US credit or title code. The 14-credit US bundle costs $64.99–$69.99, roughly $4.64–$5.00 per credit. Listeners in other regions can browse Audible UK credit packs, Audible Canada credits and Audible Australia credits.
Before you buy any code, check that the marketplace matches your account, whether you’re getting a credit or a specific title, the delivery time, and the replacement terms. Only buy as many credits as you’ll realistically use within 12 months.
FAQ
Can I get a refund for unused Audible credits?
No. Audible’s Conditions of Use say credits have no cash value and are non-refundable. If you plan to cancel, spend your credits first.
Can I gift or transfer Audible credits to someone else?
No, credits can’t be transferred between accounts. You can use a credit to buy an audiobook as a gift, or give someone a gift membership so they receive their own credits.
How many Audible credits can I have at once?
Audible’s credits page says there’s no overall limit on how many credits you can hold. Its troubleshooting page adds that some plans have a membership credit limit, and credits over that limit can expire at your next billing date. Every credit still expires 12 months after it’s issued.
Do I need credits for Plus Catalog titles?
No. Plus Catalog titles are included with Premium at no extra cost while your membership is active. Credits are for buying titles to keep.
What happens to my credits if I pause my membership?
You can keep using your existing credits until they expire, but you can’t buy extra credits while your membership is paused.
Do Audible Standard members get credits?
No. Standard gives you one audiobook selection a month, which you can only listen to while you’re a member, and unused selections don’t roll over. If you move from Premium to Standard, you keep your existing credits until their original expiry dates.
Does an Audible Base code expire before I redeem it?
According to our product pages, the redemption code itself has no redemption deadline, but we recommend redeeming it as soon as you receive it. Once the credits are in your account, Audible’s normal expiry rules apply.
The Bottom Line
Audible credits are the best-value way to get long, expensive audiobooks, but only if you use them. Remember that one credit buys one eligible title to keep, and most credits expire after 12 months or when you cancel. A credit is worth what you paid for it, from about $9.56 to $14.95 on official US plans. Check your Credit summary regularly, save credits for pricier titles, and if you need more, compare official plans with discounted codes for your marketplace. Browse the Audible US, UK, CA or AU stores above to find a pack that fits how much you listen.
